So I tried drawing my very first mandala today. If you don’t know what that is, it’s a complex doodle that is drawn in circular layers like the rings of a tree. It was both easier and harder than I thought it would be.
How can it be both?
It was easier in that you just pick a doodle element and repeat it all the way around in a circular shape. Pretty basic really. Also, because it has to be small enough to reproduce into said circular shape, it wasn’t hard to come up with shapes to draw. I used mainly circles, ovals, arched lines, straight lines and hearts.
It was harder though in that you really need to reproduce each element exactly in order to keep the layers clean. That means not only the same shape but also the same size. That is where the difficulty came in. I was extremely careful to keep my sizing the same, or so I thought, but when I got back to my starting point I would always find that I had varied it considerably more than I thought.
I am posting the one I drew today, dispite it’s numerous flaws, but for my next one I think I am going to draw myself some rings in pencil to use as guidelines to keep my sizes more accurate. I just need to get a set of circle templates first. Amazon here I come. 🙂 There is always something else you need to buy. Or is that just me? 😉
Thanks for checking out what’s on,

Good for you for trying this out, Mickie. I have not tried drawing a mandala partly for the reason you gave for it being difficult. I just do not feel my work is consistent enough. I have on other pieces worked in both directions from my starting point so that the shapes to either side of the start are the same. It helps me keep some consistency as I go around.

I am going to do some kind of circular grid in pencil for my next one so I can have reference points to maintain size and shape consistency. When I figure out something that works, I will post it for everyone.
